Broadband Suppliers
There are various issues you need to think about if you are considering choosing a broadband supplier. Some issues will, to a certain extent, be decided for you by your circumstances whilst you have more choice in others.
Firstly, you need to assess what kind of broadband service you can have and would like to have. If you live in a cabled area then you can potentially choose from cable broadband (which is delivered by cable) or ADSL broadband (which is delivered via a phone line). But, if your area is not yet cabled then you will have to pick the ADSL option. And, not all broadband suppliers operate services all over the country so this may be a consideration.
Issues to consider here include:
- What broadband speed do you want?
Speeds vary here so think about your needs as higher speeds will cost more money. If you simply want to surf the web and send the odd email then you don't need very high speeds. However if you will be downloading large files such as programs, music and videos then faster speeds may suit you better. Bear in mind that some broadband suppliers will put a download limit on accounts from a bandwidth perspective (i.e. on how much you can download) so you technically have to stay within the monthly limit you are given.
- How much will your broadband cost you?
Don't just look at the cost of the monthly broadband package here but look at any charges that will be levied for setting up the broadband and/or its equipment. Check out how long it will take to set up your connection at the same time.
- Do you want extra features?
Some broadband packages will come with extra features such as deals on phone calls and/or cable TV. You should also get a range of related web features such as web pages, email addresses and protective programs.
- Do you want to be tied into a contract?
Most broadband suppliers will want you to sign up for a contract (usually for at least 12 months) but some will give you broadband access without a contract.
- What do other people think?
Before choosing your broadband supplier make sure to go online and check out what other people are saying about the company in terms of service provisions and help and support.
